High purity helium gas is an ideal leak detection gas

    Helium, high-purity helium

Firstly, because the outermost electron of high-purity helium gas is 2, while high-purity helium gas only has one layer of electrons, and the first layer of electrons is 2. This means that a stable structure has been achieved. Therefore, the chemical properties of high-purity helium gas are relatively stable and not easily reactive or explosive. In some more valuable devices such as airplanes, spacecraft, etc., I prefer to use high-purity helium gas as the leak detection gas. However, high-purity helium gas has limited reserves in nature and is expensive. Therefore, in order to save costs, some companies also choose a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen as the leak detection gas, or directly choose nitrogen as the leak detection gas.

The role of high-purity helium gas leak detection in semiconductors

In order to prevent the surface performance of semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, and other components from deteriorating due to impurities such as water vapor, it is necessary to use shell sealing. However, due to various reasons, there are often small holes that are difficult to identify with the naked eye at the connection between the tube and the casing or probe. Therefore, after packaging the components, some methods are needed to detect the presence or absence of these small holes. High purity helium leak detection involves using high-purity helium gas to inspect small holes in electronic component packaging casings. Due to the small volume of high-purity helium atoms, they can easily pass through the small holes on the shell. This detection method can detect small holes with a leakage rate of about 10-11 to 10-12 cm3/sec, and its sensitivity is comparable to that of radioactive leak detection methods, but simpler than radioactive leak detection methods. High purity helium leak detection and testing method: Firstly, place the packaged components into a container filled with high-purity helium gas, apply pressure, and allow high-purity helium gas to enter the casing through small holes; Then extract it and blow out the high-purity helium gas remaining on the surface of the tube shell with compressed air; Then, use a mass spectrometer to detect the leakage of high-purity helium gas outside the casing.
